FNG's attempt at a modernized AK

LightScout posted:

I may have missed it, but you got rid of the Ultimak.  What's that rear sight base you switched to?

The short red AK above there has an Attero Arms rear sight replacement mount for the Micro. My camping/hiking AK has the Ultimak, and my suppressable AK has the Midwest SS-E handguard with Micro upper section.

It confuses me sometimes. Probably more so to others since photobucket is now kaput as an image host and my old images are gone from this thread.

Any preference between the three?  My SLR-107CR (eventually to be SBR'd) currently has the Ultimak rail but I don't know if I like it.  Does get warm, although I can't say it's cause any problems with the Primary Arms micro that's on there.  I know I cannot see the irons through the scope in the current config, but your pic of the Attero mount and what I've read today may be a solution.  Not really looking at the MI setup as I intend to keep the Magpul handguard on there as it does what I need it to.

I'm also torn as to which scope to use; my Primary Arms T-1 type scope or the Primary Arms Fastfire type.  This is a recreational rifle, hence the PA optics.

It’s not modern yet, not that it will ever be very modern, but this is our best AK thread. My M72 Carbine; matching numbers parts kit with AK Builder chrome lined barrel, built on a Childers receiver by Two Rivers Arms. I plan to put a LPVO on it in the future.

The black mark on the carrier is just my poor editing to hide the serial number.

I needed to take this pic for a friend, but what the hell, I'll put it out here because I'm planning on working on a few.

AK collection2

Numbers 1 and 4 are not going to get work.  #1 is a Polish AKMS kit and it is a classic example of an underfolding AKM from the height of the Cold War.  #4 is a side-folding AK74 built from a Bulgarian kit.  I may add the side rail scope mount.  It does not currently have one.

Numbers 2 and 3 are my project guns.  I have my plans, but I'm open to critiques and suggestions.  #2 is a Romanian SAR-1 in 7.62x39 that I bought during the ban years.  It came with the side rail scope mount and it has an Aimpoint PRO on a Midwest Industries mount.  Obviously, Magpul Zhukhov buttstock and MOE grip.  I intend to add a Krebs selector.  I may add a muzzle brake or flash hider, but I haven't decided which, or which one.  If I can find a set of KVAR handguards in FDE, I'll get them, otherwise paint.  I plan to Cerakote the metal Magpul FDE to match.  Other than that, not much.  This one is fairly simple.

#3 is a different story.  My intent is to get rid of the FSB, brake, and gas block, replacing them with a combo FSB/Gas Block and a BCM Gunfighter brake on a shortened 14.5" barrel.  The buttstock is a Galil and it stays, but I'm going to shorten it by 1 - 1.5".  The current LOP is longer than I like.  Warsaw LOP works fine for me.  I have an Ultimak gas tube.  I have a Texas Weapons Systems dogleg hinged dust cover.  I'm not sure if I want to use just one of them or both.  I don't like the sight radius reduction by moving the front sight back, but I also don't like the fixed peep sight for the TWS.  If anyone has thoughts there, let me know.

I’m liking #2 mostly because I’ve got some rounds behind one with the Zhukov folder and really liked it. It just fit, me. A brake of some kind would round it out and make it look outstanding, I think

I do like the under folding AKMS, too. I detect a trend, here...folding.

This is of course with the caveat that I’m a total AK neophyte. All I really know is what looks good not really if it is good or crap.

If you don’t want to drill and rivet on #4 you could get a Master Mount, they are well regarded on the various AK forums.

Sorry for the late response. So far I think my preferred setup is the Ultimak with Bobro mount on the T1. It's compatible with Magpul handguards, and if the optic goes down for whatever reason, I can take it off with the QD mount. With the Attero Arms mount or the Midwest mount, if the optic glass spiderwebs, you're kinda screwed.

Thanks for the reply.  I just pulled my Ultimak off and installed the Attero bravo mount.  Since mine is a recreational gun, the worry of the glass shattering is minimal.  I do like it and can't wait to shoot it this weekend.
