LAPolicegear has a selection.

If you don't want to buy it from them, you can easily research the choices and buy it from the source.

Is a quick disconnect desirable?

Would a messenger bag be ok? Or is she set on a sling pack? Does it have to be tactical?

Older LL Bean sling bags will fit a MacBook, but that's a tough combo to meet these days (especially with the text books!). A messenger back might be better, in which case (again) LL Bean is my go-to. I've also got an Eagle LE Courier Bag from Natchez that served me well on a TDY trip doing a similar purpose.

If it's going to be a messenger bag, Chrome makes some absolutely bombproof bags. I have one I bought pre 9/11 and used professionally (videographer) in all weather. While it hasn't seen much use in the last decade, it's still going strong and I recommend them without hesitation.

Timbuk2 has both messenger and sling bags.

Look under "laptop bags". Most of the actual single strap sling bags are way too skinny to fit a laptop.

Okay, I was not considering a quick-disconnect feature.  Did you ask that from a safety perspective?

I was browsing Amazon and noticed that yeah, the sling bags look a little slim, but thought that would force a little packing discipline and minimize the load carried.

It's sounding like a messenger bag is going to be better suited. I just know that a standard backpack is not the way she wants to go for the time being, in part because the weather is so hot and humid down here most of the year, and a pack will make her sweat bullets.

I have a Timbuk2 medium messenger bag I put together through their customize your own deal. I carried it as I finished up the last few classes I needed and I carry it daily to work. It easily held 2 classes textbooks, notebooks, and various class related items. At work it holds a binder, notebook, and my lunch. A bit over her price range as I did the customized route, but if you scan through ebay you can find a lot way under her price range.

And if you're an REI member, the 20% off sale is still active I think. If she doesn't like it she's got a year to return it.
