Aimpoint to Supply 30,000 Sights for US Army - Comp M4S (M68)

Wonder how much these will cost ... + spares 4 battery caps , pictiny thumb screws & lol - killFlash http://soldiersystems.net/2017/03/23/aimpoint-receives-us-army-contract-for-optical-sights/ The sights will be equipped with a killFlash anti-reflection device, rubber lens covers, and adapters allowing the sights to be deployed on all versions of the M16 rifle, M4 Carbine, and light machineguns such as the M240 and M249.

What mount are they using? I ask, because I want something proven and durable for a .308 gas-gun, and they imply what they are using will hold up to LMG use.

If it's the same mounts they have been using they are the standard Aimpoint mounts with the torque limiting knob.

Will that hold up to a .308 gasser all day long?

I've never seen one fail. I am unfamiliar with the term .308 gasser. The 7.62 NATO weapons we issue (M240s, M110s,MK48s) generally get purpose specific optics like an M145 MGO (Machine Gun Optic, ELCAN/ACOG) or a variable power scope. I've seen M68s on M-249s 5.56mm SAWs without issue. You just need to make sure you hear three clicks and inspect the optic to make sure nothing comes lose. I'm sure some of our other LF brothers can probably give you come better info.

I mean something like an SR25. They are so light I'm setting one up like a 5.56 gun.

Why LOL on the killflash? I'm not seeing your point or reason for the tone of your post.

killflash is pretty standard on Army optics. I had some for binos. Tankersteve

+1 There's a current thread talking about inbound glare and reduction methods, not to mention their use in not letting people beyond the muzzle see the red-tinted glint. There's even a comment hating on the killflash in the soldiersystems article, but I have not before today heard anything especially bad about them. Hell, I keep them on when I add a clipon to my systems so am not even worried about light transmission.

They come off, so I guess I still don't understand his tone. It's not like the M4 CCO'S haven't been in service for a while...

Are these 30,000 Aimpoints going to replace existing optics currently fielded by the Army and no longer serviceable, or is the army planning on adding 30,000 soldiers and this is part of equipping this increase?

This is an in-service replacement for the M68s already in use. We've received instructions to turn in older CCOs in the past based on their serial number range. I still have some CompM variants in one of our arms rooms.

I'm really hoping my unit gets these- while Team Leaders and up get ACOGs our joes are rocking CompM's, about half of which are lacking spacers and a lot of the other half are missing battery caps / deadlined. I can't for the life of me figure out why an Infantry unit with M4A1's, M240L's, PEQ15's, and PVS14's has almost no functional CCO's. Since bitching about it and filling out countless 2404's hasn't fixed any in the 4 years I've been there, getting new M68's is pretty much the only way...

kaltesherz - 2404s won't do much for you unless your supply sergeant is OK with turning them in. They have to be code F or code H (basically, nonfunctioning but repairable or nonfunctioning/nonrepairable), and then you'll have to turn them in to your supporting SSA for disposition. It sounds like most of yours are code F. Turning them in will get them off your books and as long as you're MTOE-authorized CCOs you can have your PBO request replacements against them.

Kaltsherz: Crazy, it is, but if Big Green is failing you, get spun up on DRMO. Our Sheriff's office just received 20 like new CompM4 sights from DRMO. They replaced our hailed Comp M and M2 sights. I don't know which depot they came out of, but they had thousands....

Actually, you often can. It will have to be added to your unit property book, but (quite a while ago, now that I think about it) I have picked up items from DRMO and added them to the unit property book, and had them hand-receipted to me. Plasticmag can verify if that is still kosher. However, turning in the broken crap is the right way to start. Unfortunately, with limited time on drill weekends, it can be hard to get to everything that needs doing. Tankersteve

I was seriously under the impression that the Army was leaning toward an ACOG variant. RCO-ish even. Guess I got bad gouge.

Yep, it still has to get added to the property book. Generally, DRMO equipment (now renamed to DLA Disposition Services if you're looking them up) is easy to get. I used to walk into the warehouse both on FtCKY and here on JBLM, identify what I wanted, do up the paperwork with my supply team, and then take it to PBO. Once PBO blesses off on it it's on your books (which made sense for some stuff, like ear pro, but less so for Crye knee pads). That being said, the warehouse on JBLM shouldn't...

My supply sgt is AGR, but next to useless. Scratch that, he is useless. I've talked to my CO, XO, and PL about this issue before. AT is coming up so I'll try to get someone motivated again, but this is beyond ridiculous. Almost every joe is qualifying on BUIS, yet no one seems to care about their shitty scores because technically they're still qualified. Not to mention we're transitioning to Strykers and severely understaffed (most fire teams are down to 2). But still, every M4A1 should have...

I hate to say it, but you need the buy in of leadership. If you have a slackjawed supply SGT, without the CO approving the turn-in and the PBO working it you're not going to get very far, unless... If your S4 team is good, and you trust them, you can go to them discretely with the S/Ns of the bad optics, explain the situation, and ask for disposition on the optics. Not sure if your S4s can enroll the items in the system for turn in or not, but if they work it with the PBO then you don't need...

Follow on because my edit window closed: Your supply SGT will be forced to turn them in because all transactions are now tracked in the Decision Support Tool by big Army. DST spans active, guard, and reserve, and puts suspenses in the system to hold units accountable. Units which bust suspense are tracked and discussed to the BN and CO level. Once you've divested them (if that works), point out the MTOE shortage and ask for a replenishment through your leadership by e-mail. Not sure where...
