5.11 shorts. Looking for alternatives for summer?

I have been wearing 5.11 cotton tactical shorts for years.  I wear them from everything from a trips to the park with the family , fishing, shooting, hiking, and date night.  Most of my shorts are showing wear due to use.   I really love the carry options these shorts offer for my needs.  I wanted to ask you guys if you have found any other " tactical" shorts out there that you like better or that has been improved on.  I say tactical because those type seem more adept to CC and are built a bit more on the rugged side vs. "eddie bauer" type short.

I don't need to exchange the cotton for a tech type fabric but I would not be opposed to switching and trying different materials.

I've been very happy with my LAPG Operator and Eddie Bauer Guide pro shorts and have had both for more than a few years.

The EB shorts are currently $42, are freekin awesome and I'm pretty sure I could wear them for the rest of my life.  Read the reviews.

The 5.11 Apex shorts are really lightweight and CONDOR scout shorts have great pocket layout, loads of carry options.

Thanks, Malpaso,

I ran several searches for shorts and I didn't see that come up.  Guess I should have searched for NSFW and shorts.

Ditto on the LAPG shorts.  Inexpensive and comfy.

Another favorite when I was wearing shorts all day, everyday in a tropical salt water environment: Duluth Firehose shorts.  They are pricey, but, worth it.  I would wear out the lower seams, but, just have them rehemmed and they were still serviceable.

Can somebody explain the godforsaken trend towards "skinny" shorts?

Those damned things are NOT weapon or CCW-friendly.  Even with a shirt untucked,  they tend to print... and pocket-carry becomes almost impossible for even tiny pistols.

Just a single pleat on each side gives enough extra room in front to make weapon concealment (whether in the pocket, or IWB) MUCH easier.

I wear the Wrangler Riggs cargo pants offduty and have for years.  They make a shorts version. Lots of room, lots of useful pockets and very rugged. I don't wear shorts much except around the house now, so my first 2 pair are still going hard from 2012.

You beat me too it, brother. I was going to mention Propper shorts. I don't currently have any but in all my searching, these are the ones I would buy if in need.  And I am in need. I've got more useless shorts doing nothing but taking up drawer space.  It's time to make some garage rags, and upgrade my shorts.

I was about to say how I simply live in REI Screeline pants and shorts (wearing the shorts right now), but I keep loosing track of who we're not allowed to like anymore

The only cargo shorts I've worn for a few years now have been Duluth Trading Dry On the Fly shorts.  They are much lighter in weight than the Firehose shorts and very very comfortable.  Pocket lay out is excellent and fit is great.  I will admit that I ditch the shitty belt that they include with them and instead wear them with an Ares Gear Aegis belt.

I think I have 5 or 6 pairs now.

who prepares my hands for war.

Living in Arizona, I wear shorts approximately 360 days a year.

For years I was wearing 5.11s or Old Navy Cargos. Frankly, with two cell phones, a pistol, an extra mag, a knife, a flashlight, keys, etc I HAD to have the pockets.

For the last year or so I've been exclusively wearing Wrangler performance outdoor shorts I got at walmart or Target for $22. They are comfortable, have good pockets, and are water/stain resistant. I wear mine with a Frank Proctor B.E.L.T and I have more than enough real estate to carry everything I need. And the wranglers don't scream tactical or anything.

I'm not sure how they would hold up to really hard use, but I'm impressed with everything (shorts, long pants, and shirts) in wranglers  performance line. And you can't beat the price.

If anyone goes this route I'd suggest that you try the shorts or pants on before you buy. Sizing is a little inconsistent and pocket placement / type of pocket is variable.

Other than PT or at work, if I'm awake I'm wearing Wrangler s. I've even worn the performance pants (in khaki) at work on occasion...

I have multiple pairs of Riggs pants, including a couple of pairs of ranger cargo pants and one pair of shorts. They are my preferred work clothing. They are durable, comfortable, not too expensive, and look more casual than 5.11 and similar tactical brands. I recommend them.

I'll third the LAPG Operator shorts. There's nothing comparable at their price point ($20ish). I've been wearing the same two pairs for close to 6 years now. They're my go to. The pants are also my go to cool guy pants because everything else is absurdly expensive and I'm poor.

TacticalGeardotcom has the Propper poly/cotton ripstop BDU shorts on sale for $19.54/pair.

Im a big fan of Cheap surplus BDU/DCU/whatever camo pants chopped into shorts.

Cheap, comfortable, durable. I have brit army pants chopped, few patterns of BDUs chopped down.

If I could find cheap surplus crye fields they’d be my go to for chopping into shorts.

They're out there. Surplus stores near base have FRACU in OEF-CP for cheap. I wound up with a set, un-issued combat shirt, used trousers, for...reasons.

Learn how to talk and how to fight, if you can't do one you'll be doing a lot of the other.

Im in Canada, so short of occasional trips to the States for vacation no surplus ocp here...stuck to online stores/fleabag hunting.

I’m going to have to show my wife this post, as she’s convinced I need to update from Levis 501....certainly don’t want my ‘pistol’ printing around some of her school teacher friends.

I do need shorts and caved to going to a Polo and looking at the cargo shorts this holiday weekend

TAD Force 10 cargo shorts are my go-to.  The AC version is nice and light for hot weather; the ripstop version is a little heavier, but still good to go.  Kuhl would be my other choice, though I find their hip pockets to run on the shallow side.  I'm patiently waiting for PDW to get their cargo shorts back in stock in my size, as those look pretty awesome.
