A letter doesn't have to be strongly worded, or even  slightly aggressive to get the message across.

It just has to have the correct signature block.

Sometimes though some people don't understand the message even then.

It is those particular times when you have to print the letter on decent paper and hand deliver it.. sometimes though...you have to wrap the letter around a baseball bat or a brick to properly deliver it.

Additional updates:

Even though I hate Facefuck or Twitterbook or whatever that shit is called, I have been able to be invited to his page (not important how).  Here’s what’s up.

-he has his new machines in place and from pictures, it SEEMS as if he is running strong

-he did make 5 folders, 3 for waiting customers and 2 for Blade show.  I’m not happy that mine is not done although he’s taking two to sell down there.

-he made a shitload of things to take to Blade

-he finally contacted me as I used my uh....”name” to enquire as to where my knife was.  I think I surprised him.  He said it needed to be assembled but everything is ready.  My knife has a black spanto blade with bronze bolsters.

-I don’t know how the request for funds worked out.  It is not mentioned anymore.

Any updates on DJ's  woes?  I was leaning towards buying an American Kami, but hesitated when this thread came out. Then I started looking REAL hard at a Medford.

I like the looks of an AK a little more, and already own one.  It has proved to be a real workhorse, and has held up famously. The more I use it, the more I like it.      But, I am not going to jump into the middle of an unknown time frame to actually get one.

There is a knife shop here in the valley that has recently become a Medford dealer. (He told me he was literally waiting on his shipment, which was supposed to be there within days according to the shop's owner. I guess I don't really know if they ever came in, but a simple visit will confirm that.)

Sure as shit,  I know what's going to happen........

yep........

I'll end up getting both.

Bill, thanks for the reminder.  Get the fucking Medford.

There was a glimmer of hope when he displayed 5 folders right before Blade.  Interestingly, 3 were for customers and 2 were to take to the show to be used to get more orders AND THEN SOLD.  So some motherfucker that just walks into Blade gets to buy a knife that a bunch of people have been waiting years for.   Like up to 5 years.

To drive me even more nuts, he posted a video of him working the actions on the folders, all 5 one right after another.  They “sounded” amazing.  The lock up was like bolt gun.  Of course I wouldn’t know in person.

Medford makes killer shit.  Really beefy shit.  Some of his folders have blades .25 “ thick.   The Praetorian Ti is his top of the line but he makes a lot of bomb proof blades.  Most importantly.....YOU CAN FUCKING GET ONE.  Amazing concept.  Paying for some thing then actually getting it!  Wow.

Ah what the hell.  DJ went dark after Blade some three months ago.  Like inkwell in a buried box dark.

Being my impish and fun loving self I used my FB "account" to inquire as to what he is doing.  That brought out the beast in most....some with five....six....fucking SEVEN YEARS of waiting, all paid in full up front like me.

Usually  a litany of defenders come out swinging but only one this time and he was overrun with a quickness.   But before he was shown the internet door, he claimed: he is depressed, he has family issues, he is learning CNC on his own and for the first time, he has a band.  Never heard that one but if he is on fucking tour instead of covered in steel particles, I'll be really ... no wait, I'm already angry.  I'm way beyond that now

DO ONE HERE DARE MAKE A PAID IN FULL ORDER WITH HIM.  YOU WILL GET THE FUCKING OF YOUR LIFE.

Sorry to hear this Con. His rep on the knife forums (Bladeforums & USN) I frequent is done - members at both that have been burned. It would take a lot of work on his part to regain a buyer's trust at this point.

Any idea how many “customers” got burned?

Bill,

I am unsure of the amount of customers but there are quite a few.  All pretty much worse than my story.

I mean think about this.  You show people waiting for folders a video of five of them that look great.  He opens each one.  They fly out and lock with a very satisfying thwack.  Fantastic.

Then he packs some of them up, goes to Blade and fucking SELLS them to whomever walks up to the booth.  If that doesn't piss you off, I'm thinking you're in a coma.  And he tells everyone his intentions to do just that at Blade.  Now, months after the show, you go dark.  I know that there are some who can reach him and I know that people who have no where near the wait I or anybody else have get their knives in months.  Maybe they are some dudes not to fuck with who paid and are demanding their stuff in a not friendly way.  I dunno.  But what I do know is those dudes exist....I'm one of them.  No one does this to me.

I have already started the ball rolling with people who take care of issues like this and are very much interested in how many victims there are.  That's it about that for now.

Every time I read updates in this thread ....I just have to shake my damn head. How far has DJ Urbanovsky fallen.? Sheesh. My SHIIT bag is sitting next to me and the damn thing has been bombproof.  When it comes to his knives etc....you almost have to wonder if he needs Boker to take over the whole shebang to help a brotha out. Wow.

Add me to the list of people DJ stole from. In 2011 I ordered a mean bean and a recurve totaling to a bit over $400. I sent him a few e-mails inquiring about my order. He sent me what he called a "proof of life" picture. It consisted of a bunch of unfinished blades laid out, and I was able to pick out a recurve in the shot.

I'm pissed at myself for not taking more vigorous action in the matter. I guess I wasn't sure what to do. So, it's nice to see karma winding up for a huge kick to his nuts.

Yet another update, this posted by DJ on Facefuck.

He had a staff infection, machine issues and family problems.  He was welcomed back as a conquering hero by his supporters who apparently are just a glass of Koolaid short of Jim Jonesing.  It is truly bizarre.  Good news his that his trip to Lourdes means my folder should he here soon.  Yeah.

Is there a very delicate and sensitive way I can ask Con-dudewhat the status is/was on his knife procurement from DJ?   If someone knows of a way to ask our eminence  without him blowing a gasket-let me know.

(I was at a LGS today and actually saw an American Kami on a table. It got me to wondering.)

I have no gaskets left to blow concerning this topic.

He is now saying that he is full speed ahead and has showed a lot of new product on Facefuck.  This includes folders.  According to him, any ordered folder is in a various state of completion.  At this point it is white noise.  I WILL get my knife or my money, of that you can be sure but right now I have important things to do.

Counselor,

Sorry to hear about this. It angers me to no end when guys do this. Completing stuff to sell while you have customers who have been waiting is absolute thievery.  Koster knives is the same, takes money up front, completely dark for years and selling knives all the while.

As a guy who is trying to start selling knives, I've taken note of all of this and am planning accordingly.

Not taking away from Consigliere's problems, but Dan Koster is actually worse. He was taking money without delivering knives for far longer. Sad thing is he makes a really nice knife. I've got a Scandi-Nessmuk from him that is outstanding. Went to order another knife and heard nothing for over a year. Then after contacting him I'm told it should be soon. Then dark again for several months. During that whole time I was seeing his knives pop up at various dealers websites. Finally said fuck it and watched him implode over the next year.

Hopefully you get your money instead of the knife Consingliere. If you're like me, the knife will feel "tainted" and you'll not get any pride of ownership out of it.

Ahh what the hell.  I'm in a mood already today.

Dateline:  Day 850:

Facefuck shows that his CNC, at least in pictures, is running.  Besides using electricity, I don't know what running actually means but it's running.  Multiple pics of completed folders yet no word on mine.  Seems also his father had to have surgery so there was a delay for him to take care of him.  Family first and all that.

His fan club is back and cheering wildly over his resurgence and sheer determination.  I sometimes think.....and not just in this matter....that THEY are the sane ones and I am the person who is spiraling into the depths of dementia.  It would make more sense at this time.

Investigation continues.......

Running generally means “making chips” or eliminating all the metal from a blank that is not part of the final or near final configuration of the piece being made.

Now there has been a time or two over the years where I have needed looking after post surgery, post stroke, etc. But it was not a 24/7 proposition.

Many CNC machines have the ability to run “lights out” meaning no one in attendance of the machine.

Once a day  or so someone shows up and reloads blanks into whatever palletizing system you employ to keep the machine running lights out.

This should never have happened.

OK, just another update.

DJ and his sycophants have DISAPPEARED from his FB site.  As in gone.  There are zero comms.

As such, I have no choice but to ask for criminal proceedings to begin from both the local PD and the US Post Office Postal Inspectors.  Anybody here from Omaha, let me know.  Since I always pay by USPS money orders via USPS Priority Mail, this is wire and mail fraud.  A couple of other guys are sending civil demand letters and will be suing him.  Suing is easy.  I like my approach better.

Not sure on the automatic application of the wire/mail fraud statutes just because of the method of payment -- pesky intent element to fraud, among other things, and could still be wire fraud even without the USPS involvement -- but it's worth it just to get the postal inspectors involved in the case. I rate those guys just behind the USSS as the fed agency I least want to tangle with. I brought them a case in a similar capacity years back when an opposing party tried to fake a certificate of service on something or other, and they were highly motivated and efficient once they got wind of the scheme.

My thought process was similar to yours -- why just file a bar complaint when I can get the feds involved? That said, with any luck we have someone in the LF bar association who is local and can file a quick sworn account (or similar, don't know Nebraska law), get your inevitable default judgment, drop a miniature lien on whatever property he has, and sit back and wait for a call to pay you something  next time he sells/refis/whatever said property. Sending bank levies to every bank in town is also quite cathartic.

Plus everything can be traced and money orders can be cancelled.

Establishing intent to defraud.  He's running a knife Ponzi scheme is the best way to put it.  I'll take my chances.
