Ballistics for bears

.308 - FAL, 16" barrel incl. FH (the right arm of the free world and the Alaskan bush)

the Fal is 20-30 rounds, depending on the mag.

The Model 12 is the best for looking under the radar, followed by the Guidegun. As the 50 Beowulf is pretty close to 45/70 in 'normal loads' (you can, of course, buy and handload 45/70 very hot for modern guns), round capacity and reload wise it beats the Guidegun.

Of course, if you handload you can go crazy with the 45/70. There are some very big/heavy plugs out there (that is a 9mm in the photo)

All that said, the FAL is my normal go-to gun for bear country.

Re the FAL:  someone long ago was making a QD axis pin for them.

Had a cone starter to align the housing/safety sear/receiver.

Damned if I can recall who made them or how it locked once inserted.

But if you could find/improvise/make one...your FAL becomes take down as well.

A strip of masking tape across the real of the receiver will stop the BCG falling out & won't impede the action even if it is chewed up inside on firing.  Just a bit extra to clean out on cleaning.

As a side note: ...and you guys complain about the odd snake or spider in my country?  Ha.

It would be useful for BATFE and NSSF to make a comic book type propaganda poster that would be distributed to all FFL dealers to postup around the shop and on the wall by the gun racks.

TRUTH BOMBS:

SPRING SET IS A MYTH- LOAD YOUR MAGAZINES FULLY- LEAVE THEM FULLY LOADED.

AMMUNITION FOR SELF DEFENSE SHOULD BE PREMIUM EXPANDING HOLLOW POINT BULLETS.

AMMUNITION FOR BEAR DEFENSE SHOULD BE HARD CAST SOLIDS.

FOR THE LOVE OF ODIN DO NOT MIX HARD CAST BULLETS AND HOLLOW POINTS IN YOUR MAGAZINE.  THE SAME GOES FOR BUCKSHOT AND SLUGS.

A HEAVY MAGNUM LOAD IS WASTED ON YOUR  SHOOTING ABILITY.  BUY A PISTOL AND AMMUNITION THAT YOU CAN CONTROL AND SHOOT WELL.

THE GAS RINGS ON YOU AR-15 DO NOT NEED STAGGERED

CARRYING A DEFENSIVE PISTOL WITH AN EMPTY CHAMBER IS DUMB- IF YOU DON'T TRUST A MODERN LOADED FIREARM, GET CURRENT TRAINING.

YOUR GIRLFRIEND'S PINK LADYSMITH THAT SHE SHOOTS EVERY WEEK IS MORE USEFUL THAN YOUR DIRTY HARRY .44 MAGNUM THAT YOU HAVE NOT FIRED IN 3 YEARS BECAUSE IT HURTS.

DO NOT USE BIRDSHOT IN YOUR HOME DEFENSE SHOTGUN.

The LGS would loose too many sales.... not to mention they are often the ones propagating that bullshit cause ya know the best home defense gun is a judge and a Taurus is just as good as a Glock and half the price.

Yup, the FAL takes down with no issues (no idea why it was not in the 'takedown photo'?). Both my Metric and Inch with stock pins.

And true on the BCG. I just put a rubber band on it to keep it from sliding out.  And make sure to not pull the trigger when they are apart

Proposed to satisfy scientific curiosity (in a Colin Furze kind of way).  Cutting stock.  Drilling out tube holes.  Inserting telescoping aluminum tube (think collapsing stock on M4).  Not legal in US but legal in Canada where it is illegal to carry a handgun in the woods... Collapsed when walking about - for compactness and convenience.  Slide open to full stock length for better accuracy.

I’ve actually been toying with the idea for a folding stock for a lever action myself.

Haven’t been able to nut anything out concrete yet, but I’m looking at the Stormwerkz adaptor.
