Ok I’m looking to buy several thousand rounds of 223/556 ammo to stash away.
Looking for recommendations as to brand, best cartridge, best packaging, best price?

I use targetsportsusaDOTcom
I'd stick with Federal xm193. Cheap and easy.
Packaging? Ammo cans. Better than cardboard boxes.
I have had excellent service from SGAMMO. I recently got some IMI M193 and it has been very good ammo.

Second this. They have bulk orders on a lot of 62 grain 556 as well. I would also recommend picking up some silica gel or something similar as well.
I go with TargetSports as well. Free shipping, discreet packaging.
Targetsports. I go with M193 from whatever brand meets the specs and is least expensive.
Another vote for SGAmmo. I almost exclusively shop there for online ammo. I bought 2k of the IMI last summer and had zero problems. Decent price too.
I've only heard good things about Target Sports, but never shopped there.
I have also had good luck with TargetSports, 9mm, .45 and 5.56mm.
I've shot thousands of rounds of .223 by S&B (9 & 45 too). However, it has a steel core (attracts a magnet) so not optimal for my local indoor range.
Check out bonefronggunclub.com for higher end 5.56 (Gold Dot, MK318 etc.). Also similar products in 9mm & .45.
Once upon a time G&R Tac offered good deals on Black Hills 5.56mm, but it's been awhile (well a decade or so) but it was good M193.
I've never bought or fired and ComBloc 5.56 (or any other caliber) ammo. Beyond a spam can of PRC 7.62x39 bought at the Pomona Fair Grounds gunshots in California in the 80's. Too its credit, it fire well last year in an AKM type, which I first cleaned with boiling water. Would not do that in my ARs.
In today's political climate, but early and often. Max out your gun budget and climate controlled storage. It'll probably never been cheaper.
YMMV
G&R and Targetsports both have MEN 5.56 and IIRC 9mm for similar pricing. TS does free shipping on case lots, so that saves you a lot when you're ordering a bunch.

Is S&B steel core or a bi-metal jacket? (They attract magnets, too).
I REALLY appreciate the replies. Palmetto has Federal M193 on stripper clips for 129.00 per 420 shipped in an ammo can.

Should be a rebate on most Federal ammo as well.
Not specific to your request but a great discussion on where to get ammo one you decide what to get:
Respectfully suggest you try the AmmoSeek app.
Wolf Gold can be found on occasion for like $305 shipped for 1,000 rounds. This stuff is labeled as 55 gr .223, but it's velocities are pretty much in the m193 ball park. This is my personal favie as you can get it from SG Ammo pre packaged in cans for only a few dollars more typically.

+1 all of this. BFGC has decent prices on those higher end products as well.

I’ve used AmmoSeek. But just the website.
Downloaded the app a couple of hours ago. So much nicer and easier to use than the website. It’s 0230 and I haven’t been to sleep yet because I’ve been playing with it since 0015 this morning.
In 55 gr FMJ, how does Magtech & PMC compare to say American Eagle?
I would say Magtech is probably nicer, but have absolutely no data to back this up.
I just picked up 1000 rounds of Perfecta .223 (made by Fiocchi) 55gr for $284 and then also grabbed 500 rounds Winchester 9mm 124gr for $108.
I used ammunition depot.

Wolf Gold is my current fav as well. Loved by AR & SCAR alike. Shoots very clean, too.
second for wolf gold
SGAmmo has wolf gold shipped for under 300/1K. Aim surplus has the german GECO 9mm on sale for like 182/1K that is clean and very accurate
I really appreciate the heads up on Wolf Gold.
That is cheaper than state agencies in my state get 55fmj.....
Something that I haven't seen asked. Are you wanting maximum amount of ammo to put back, or the high quality expanding ammo?
Well I’m hoping it’s just stocked up to shoot up in practice/training.. BUT if worst case, it needs to be “duty” grade too.
BUT if it comes to the point I’m digging in this stash for defenses, it really won’t matter if I’m shooting expanding or M193/855.
Hope that don’t sound DERP.
Midway has IMI M855 for 119.00 for 420 in a 30 Cal ammo can.
Free shipping over 100.00

Doesn’t sound too derp to me.
About 10 years ago, when our rifle/active shooter training/ mindset was less enlightened than it is now, I asked the training Sergeant for extra ammo to fill 2 more rifle mags in addition to my issued 2. She told me that she couldn’t give out anymore duty .223 at the time. She cringed when I told her that I’d fill up on 55gr ball instead. When she objected, I asked, “Lauri, if I’m down to my third or fourth rifle mag, do you really give a shit what I’m shooting the guy with?”
She thought for a moment, and then gave me 60 rounds of our practice ammo, and said, “you’re right.”
Point is, unless you’re getting a killer deal on a premium ammo, whatever you’re shooting, as long as it’s 100% reliable and reasonably accurate and close to your zero, will do work.
If the end of American Society As We Know It arrives, and you zip someone with some American Eagle 55gr ball, it will still ruin their day; it’s not as if they’ll look down at their chest and say, “whew! Glad that wasn’t 75gr TAP!”
If on the other hand, that day doesn’t arrive, but you get an opportunity to bust into your stash to take a class, you won’t feel guilty.
It all depends on why you feel you need to stockpile. There are plenty of good reasons, and plenty of dubious ones, but only 1 is yours.
Sometimes, I think the more gun-centric forums (not this one) lead people to believe that if they’re not stacking mk. 262, mk. 318, or Hornady TAP deep, then they’ve virtually sold their family into post-apocalyptic servitude.
Just don’t forget the 9mm and the .22LR.
Im just buying it to shoot it, so affordable brass cased is what I look for

How would you compare the GECO HP to WIN SXZ?
Ive only shot the ball 115 and 124 so far. If I could find their 556 id try that too
Fair enough. Speer Gold dot is about the most affordable duty ammo I have been able to source for the time being. Roughly .50 cents a round if you shop the interwebs, but yeah, anything will work in a pinch.
As far as rifle ammo goes, the SGD .223 62 grain variant is exactly what I have my duty magazines stuffed with.
Very accurate from both AR and SCAR platforms.
- And one of Doc GKR’s recommended loads.
This is what we replaced the equivalent Federal bonded load with (LE223T3 ?).
I know several of you don't like Yeager, but he's good for posting deals. 38 left as of 1700 8 Mar '18
Put up 1620 of Federal XM193 today, with new charged desiccant packs.
Putting up 1080 of M855 with dessicant packs tomorrow.

I got a 420 round can on stripper clips in the 30 round boxes sealed and zip tied stashed away for a rainy day. its good stuff.
Would there be any benefit to using green tip over m193 in CONUS?
I use M193 exclusively for range ammo. All the ranges I have easy access to are indoor and don't allow green tip.
I’ve got 4-300 Guatemalian battle packs, wrapped, sealed and stached.
Low_Speed_Notper8or posted:Would there be any benefit to using green tip over m193 in CONUS?
Not really. Especially if you're not worried about armor. Even then, m193 through a 20" tube will make a pretty good dent in most stuff.
Well I decided to keep a 420 round can of XM192 on stripper clips.
I figure every rifle I get I would keep one of those those cans handy with a sling,4-5ish magazines, a type 63 Chicom chest rig(maybe for 20 round 7.62x39 magazines but it fits a Pmag right) with an IFAK in one of the side pouches and bore snake/ballistol and a howard leight Ear pro
