I have sat here and thought about how to frame my thoughts on this for the last week or so. To reiterate, I got on this forum as a young team leader many moons ago at Ft. Campbell and now I am a retiree that teaches JROTC for the DOD in South Korea. I wouldn't consider myself a prepper persee, but I have a strong belief in self reliance and being prepared. The difference is it is a bit harder for me to stockpile a lot of anything considering where I am at, so I have to be scalable. A few weeks ago, a lot of us thought this was the zika/SARS/MERS/Ebola or whatever that would fade in and out as quickly as it made the news and a lot of that was because it was only in this region at the time. Reason for that is the sad reality that more Americans are concerned with the economy and election instead of being aware of what goes on outside their three foot world as that is what the news feeds them. I began to research a lot of different Doctors on youtube that spoke from strictly a medical perspective to gain neutral insight,. That is when it landed on our doorstep here in the ROK. Within days, it is spreading fast. Manufacturing along with many other things are at a standstill at this point or greatly reduced. The US military has even changed what it is doing. Schools are closed and while these things may be common occurrences with some of our host nations, the US military doesn't generally follow suit. While this may not be the black plague, and I hope it isn't, the reality is nobody knows much. While people seem to lack the intelligence to be concerned as they are being told that washing your hands is the only real defense and wear a mask, that should demonstrate again the lack of knowledge on it. This is a global issue and if/ when it hits it will be bad. I do hope I am wrong though.
A 3% mortality rate is not GOOD, but it isn't a world cleansing event.
What is BAD are the idiot reactions. How many people blew off their flu vaccination earlier in 2019? I bet they line their ass up for a COVID-19 vaccination! What we are also going to see is an UPTICK in seasonal flu on the heels of COVID-19. Its going to be a multiple whammy. As well as other illness creep up.
@no one in particular
Masks!? How about a shout out to all the Islam-ophiles who were poo-poo-ing the burka and instead are now purchasing the 3M variety things by the caseload for their home? If its stupid but works its not stupid - amiright?
Yeah a F-ing SHEMAGH works better than a silly N95 mask for inhalation protection. [when correctly worn] For those buying the STYLISH "RZ face mask" or whatever they are called, Yeah: NOW WASH YOUR DAMN HANDS YOU FILTHY ANIMAL!
Respiratory protection depends on a couple things: COVERAGE and SURFACE AREA of the filter media. Even a shemagh does't have a true filtering power against smaller particles, but, its depth of coverage is deeper for the 'maze effect' of trapping larger stickier particles in the fabric. Everyone deployed knows about this, as when they went on leave or absence for a couple weeks and come back and smell that stinky-foot-mouth odor of tobacco, bad chow & not enough toothbrushing get even FUNKIER in their shemagh. Wash it regularly! Have a spare.
I am a fan of respiratory and eye protection at damn near all times. ADDED BENEFIT: Facial recognition software is defeated!
The LIBERTARIAN in me says a positive side effect of this is being able to conceal ones identity in public is a under-exercised right. BOLO? Ha-ha-NO!
I also chuckle at folks who are really freaking out and going full prepper. There is a fella on the local FB community page selling a BOX of tem N95 masks for $450. Thats HILARIOUS. Even MORE so cause someone will pay that! Morons!
@ the idiots in my community: But the same people din't have the forethought to actually keep themselves healthy before hand and stay current with vaccinations & regular checkups!
I think before I do my next PCS [possibly this late spring-Summer Quarantine dependent] I am going to sell off all my ammo & MRE's...
Then get fresh stock at my next duty station!
