OK here's a couple of pics to show what other rucks look like on the DG-16 frame. The FILBE fits right on there because it has a shorter frame sleeve, and has at least two tabs per side to tie it in. So yeah, it's a direct fit and rucked pretty good.
The ALICE does fit, however notice how the sleeve is longer and bumps into the curvature of the frame. So it does fit, but it's a tight fit, and possibly will wear under heavy use. Highly recommend using 2 wraps of "Supertack" to reinforce this area.
Also notice on both rucks, only the two inboard slots can be used to adjust top load straps. This is gonna be the case on any frame sleeve bag.
Yep, judging by how the ALICE sleeve is sitting, it doesn't look like my/our original notion is a go. Like I said in the other thread, I feel like trying to shoehorn the ALICE onto the space age frame is probably not the best option. Likely is akin to putting my legally blind grandmother behind the wheel of a Porsche: you can do it, but you're not getting the capability out of the car that it was designed to achieve.
Guess now it's time to decide if I'm going to pay the entry fee for the Porsche complete with trained rally driver, or just upgrade my ALICE with the TT frame. Will look forward to your testing/comparison you mentioned with your buddy's TT, but since I don't ruck nearly as much as I used to I'll likely wind up dancing with the girl that brung me...
Yeah that is a very apt description; if I wuz gonna invest in a state of art DG-16 frameset, I'd go at least with a surplus LBT (about 300 on ebay), or a TT Malice or PNW (4-800). So yeah putting a DG-16 frameset on a Large ALICE is like shoe-horning a VW body onto a Porsche frame.
It can be done, but I'd open up the seams, cut the sleeve way back, remove the pad, and add side and bottom tabs. The FILBE sleeve is just about perfect to use as a template.
In fact, if you want to build something in CB, a FILBE bag is dirt cheap (around 40 bucks), although I would specify new or like new, even if I paid a little more. Then you could get the DG-16 frameset in khaki and drive on. Now granted the FILBE is dated and surrounded in molle. But easily remedied if you take it apart.
Another option would be a Large Molle (1-200.-). Again, lots of molle, but easily fixed. Here you could build a Crossfire style "jock-strap" for the top, since the sleeve is missing. Then realign the tabs a bit.
And finally the Molle 4,000 wouldn't be a bad choice (around 250.-). Already has a sleeve for the 1606 frame.
Just depends if you need OCP or CB/Kahki.
