First Spear Tubes Hardware

Yeah call them.  It's a bit clunky but then it's really worth it.

I have been too lazy to do things like call and order special stuff, but FOXDIE did, and today he finally came by with the ones I haven't paid him for, and we sewed up his ESSTAC Bushboar.

Not a lot to say about it, but I thought you may all be interested in seeing what a mod looks like, even done by someone as halfassedly as me.

I will generally sew anything you want, but you have to stop by, and watch me do it. If you can't help, I put you to work otherwise, such as loading all my mags as part of the FOPR event prep:

The one side had more... glue reside maybe, and caused some issues snagging during sewing, so isn't as neat as the first side.

Next, and hopefully before the FOPR class, I'm gonna mod my Hellcat and my MAV to take the other two in the first photo. I got the repair versions, but sadly they really, really require 1.5" webbing, and on entirely, 100% not MOLLE pitch, so there's no simple clipping it on, so cutting and sewing is in my future for those, too.

I remember what else I was gonna say: I was hoping they were at the pitch of MOLLE, and could simply remove SRs and attach the repair version of this thing at least halfassedly without sewing, but make no mistake, they are very much not.

You must sew on 1.5" webbing at the right pitch.

Later on today I also did my Hellcat, and while it fixes everything stupid about the center attachment there, it was a hell of a lot more work than the Bushboar, and I didn't sew it so well so no photos for you. But, everything is doable and the tubes may indeed be the best way to update an old, broken, or just stupid split rig of any sort.

Is everyone adding a release cord  to their tubes, or are some of you just putting your thumb under the release lever? As shown above, I helped TJ's with his idea of a paracord+shrinktube pull which seems nice, but playing with my rig it doesn't seem especially necessary. Thoughts?

Hmm, ok, maybe good field expedient, if you have good mail service.  Good idea, if required, but added weight.

Yeah I have wondered why they went with a 1.5" format, instead of 1".

But it's still pretty easy and works well.

I use a para cord lanyard, wrapped in duct tape, in lieu of shrink wrap tube.

I haven't put it on a scale, but I was shocked how much weight I cut off the Hellcat. I am sure it's like 2-3 oz but that feels like a lot; all that velcro, snap, webbing, reinforcing webbing, SR, etc. really adds up.

I feel, without quite direct comparing and only having it done for 18 hours, that the tubes are also easier to use as the webbing attachment system is so simple there's less dumb bulk to get in the way, bunch up, etc as on many other vest attachment systems.

Yeah man weight is a big factor these days.  Years ago, we built this shit bomb-proof, to last forever, but we paid the penalty for over-building everything like that.  Nowadays you gotta be smarter than that.  I shit-can as much molle as possible, and go direct-sewn after I know where I want everything.  You don't think it's that big a deal, but it is.  500d is my new friend.

I like the cord and tape pull tabs.  Negligible weight but more positive grip when needed.
