I was done with this when I saw words to the effect of “you better unfuck yourselves and reopen my thread” in the protest thread.  I was surprised the ban hammer didn’t drop or at least probation.

So, it was that fine line thing. Didn't want to ban him for an unorthodox idea. I wanted to accomplish some education of "how" to go about proposing unusual ideas. I don't know if it was clear to you all but I tried to do some education by PM. He was unhappy that I wasn't having the discussion in public. For a commissioned O, he wasn't getting the public / private differences in mentoring.

I appreciate the PMs, etc on the thread as it was developing.

The hammer swung when he combined repeated refusals to present sources with claiming it was a butt-hurted issue. Sigh.

@scott Oldham - thank you, sir!

Ultimately, Thanatorched did get educated. He spoke with DocGKR by phone the morning after he was banned. The indication I got was that a light switch came on during that conversation. IF it did, it was because of Doc's efforts.

God bless Doc for his infinite patience and genuine willingness to share the knowledge freely, both in a open forum such as this at his leisure, and by giving out his phone number and answering calls from complete knuckle dragging strangers with a fraction of his smarts whenever their dumbass manages to hit the digits in the right order. Axe me how I know this to be true

I just want to thank the Mods/Admins for opening the thread back up, and DocGKR for responding.  The OP's idiotic argument aside, there was a lot of good knowledge passed around in here, and I learned a few things.

Thoughts occuring to me, following thread for SME input:

-re: FMJ vs JHP total wound cavity volumes....the actual "sharpness" (apologies; do not know of an engineering term) of the edge of an expanded or unexpanded JHP (vs pretty "unsharp" FMJ, WC, SWC, et al) in efficient cutting of elastic circulatory structures isn't really accounted for in any test media, but it does present anecdotally in autopsy and scene examinations.

-what deforming pills do is usually seen to happen in the 1st 2" or so of test media (Burczynski's photos for Federal are a good visual), so the relative "slowdown" of deforming projos does contribute to loss of velocity as the bullet continues in a human target....but, as aforementioned re: NYPD, in a pass-through, the exit velocity of deforming projectiles is also much less. Our 1st .40SW duty load (165gr Federal Bonded Tactical) would exit 16" gel blocks, but with the velocity you'd see if an officer chucked the bullet downrange by hand (ie, low wounding potential in an 'overpenetration'). I was never able to get good chrony data the few times I set one up behind gel (chunks of gel, bullet strikes on the equipment, etc.), but FMJs and non-expanded JHPs were seen to exit and impact at what appeared to be far greater velocity.

In the most general of senses, I can't imagine a switch to FMJ duty ammo in light of options/info available and factors in play.

I'm sad I somehow missed this when the now infamous Thanotorched was still posting.

Hell I've been a member here for a bit over 9 years and I still don't know what I don't know, but I know that someone here does know what I need to know, if I know enough to just ask.

Ya know?

Fwiw, there is a Primary & Secondary modcast that featured DocGKR and wound ballistics issues.
