My department requires me to use Safariland Safarilaminate 1-inch wide (2-inch long) high-gloss, hidden snap belt keepers. For various reasons, I need to find (or modify) a belt keeper that roughly looks like this belt keeper but I need it to be 2.25 or 2.50 inches long. Does anyone know someone that could do some “modifications” to a Safariland belt keeper to lengthen it or make a longer black belt keeper with a hidden snap (preferably with a glossy finish)?
I would think that almost any decent leather shop / tack -harness- saddlemaker / holster maker could hook you up.
I used to have several basketweave keepers -but with exposed snap- that were slightly over length like that.
A couple had a hidden cuff key on the backside of the snap and one had a small but sturdy oh-shit blade. They did leave wear marks on the belt though.
Just to clarify-- you need the overall length of the keeper to be 2.5" long or you need it for a 2.25" or 2.5" duty belt?
Try A.E. Nelson. My agency still uses a lot of their leather stuff. Quality stuff, but who knows how much they'll charge you for a one-off like that.
A big "Thank You" to everyone for the thoughts / replies so far. To answer Dave Reeves' Question - I have a standard 2 1/4 inch duty belt and use standard Safariland Safarilaminate 3/4 (wide) belt keepers. There is one place on my belt set up where I need a belt keeper to go around my "pants belt" and two (2) layers of my duty belt. The ends of my duty belt overlap in this one area and I can't quite make a standard keeper work. My "work around" is that I just snap one of the two snaps. If a keeper were a little longer (another 1/4 inch, for sure a 1/2 inch longer would work), I'd be all set. So, ideally, I'd be looking at getting something close to a standard 3/4 (wide) belt keeper, in black, hidden snaps, hi-gloss is a plus (I could make plain black work) -- just 1/4 to 1/2 inch longer than usual. I hope this makes sense. Thanks again!
Perfect Fit is a leather shop in Maine making badge cases/wallets and other leather/duty goods IN HOUSE. Owner used to work for 5.11. Give them an email, they might be able to help:
Thank you again for all of the great suggestions!
Just spitballing, any way to take a current one to a shop, have it cut in half, add the needed length in the middle and re-attach? Could even be elastic. Nobody ever sees the middle of the belt keeper that goes on the inside.
Great suggestion. Thank you. I think I'll take one down to my local shoe repair shop. They obviously know how to cut and sew leather. To your point, it doesn't matter how they lengthen it, the new longer part will be in back. Thanks again!
