The above technical report from 1968 includes the following data regarding the M14 rifle:

Mean time to overhaul....... 1.5 hours

Time between overhauls........ 5 years

Mean time between failure...... 270 days

Mean time to repair.......... .6 hour

Does the "mean time between failure" indicate a failure/breakage of a major component or something of a more minor nature?

You missed the part where they state that this is based on an average usage of 810 rounds (610 Ball, 50 Tracer, & 150 Blank) fired per year.

This works out to 4,050 rds between overhauls, and 599 MRBF.
