Question On Pack Sizing

How do you go about sizing a backpack properly?

My wife is 5' tall and weighs 100 lbs. A standard 3 day assault pack like the pink LBT one would be too large for her to carry. The straps would probably be too far apart and maybe too tall for her torso.

What's the proper way to measure?

My personal advice would be:

What role has this backpack, be carried extensively or just from car to work, for casual stroll with light load?

What shall it keep in volume and weight? What is the largest Item (a 17# laptop for example)? What is the heaviest Item?

If you have this cleared go/drive with your wife  to a big & good brick and mortar outdoor store, let her choose what she likes from quality manufacturers, have it properly adjusted by the personal, loaded up with aprox. the maximal intended load and carry it at least 15 better 30 minutes. It may suck mildly to be carried, but should not hurt.

REI, even small one, are especially good at this. Good selection of brands, and a bunch of weighted bags for loading. Others are hit and miss on how helpful.

If technical stuff, bring it. When I got my last computer/camera/etc. bag I brought my current one and loaded up the various bags, several times, before we settled on one. I was in the Chrome store doing this for over 2 hours. But 5 years later I have the bag still.

In the camping/outdoor gear world, several daypack companies make packs sized specifically for women. Typically the straps are narrower and spaced slightly differently for someone smaller.
