Red Dot Sights for Handguns

Anyone ever "RMR cut" their SIRT?

I know a few have from googling, but they are super, duper vague about how? I can just follow the disassembly instructions for battery changes and see what I see but if any of you all have done it, would like to know if there's anything to do or specifically not do.

No, I don't have $600 to throw at my training pistol; this seems like a good use for the $23 knockoffs on eBay, so have one coming. Comes with a plate, so was hoping to even just epoxy that onto the slide plastic, once I make a bit of a relief cut, maybe.

It is an ALS/SLS model. I ordered it Dec 12 direct from Safariland, and have not seen it yet. It will be my patrol holster when it gets here.

My issue pistol is a M&P .40 CORE 4.25" barrel. It wears a X300U light, and will wear RMR again once the holster comes. If the Acro plate drops first, I will use the Acro sight.

The difficulty of an rmr cut on a sirt will vary based on if you have a metal slide or polymer.   If polymer it should be easy, make a template and hand cut if you are decent with a drill press or dremel.   I don’t know the slide construction of the metal slide so I can’t speak to that.   For either, the lack of recoil should dispel any concerns of requiring a super solid mount.

Plastic! Forgot they made metal slides. I am often pretty handy; just wanted to make sure no critical electronics right up there for some reason.

Yes, like the cheapass RDS I got for the blue gun, I assumed the knockoff would last essentially forever in this situation.

I have totally got broken knockoffs on airsofts. They get used enough in FOF situations they break from handling alone, even the ones that seem pretty nicely built.  Of course, never by me, but by other cadre, and students who borrow them

THANKS!  I must be a complete window-licker because for the past 18 months every time I've run through the "FIND YOUR PERFECT HOLSTER" it tells me to fuck off as soon as I get to the RMR part.

I run my old school Sig228 in a 6304 and love it. I've been trying to dress my MnP the same way for, what seems like, forever!!

Side Note: way back when I called Safariland to build out that Sig holster the order lady said, "Go the Cops Plus website and order these numbers. They'll save you a lot."  So I did … and she was correct!

RD

ETA:  I fucked around the website for an hour and can't get an RMR version to pop up for a M&P9mm with 4.25" bbl.  I CAN get Longeye's exact SKU if I enter "M&P40 Core" with "4.00"bbl.  But NOTHING RDS with a 4.25" bbl.   However, if you look and  guns it says fit - it has 4.00" and 5".00 listed so it stands to reason a 4.25" should work.  I am measuring Breach to Bore … maybe S&W / Safariland measure differently.  I guess I'll just have to call.

I think you have to choose the CORE version in order to be allowed to choose an RDS at Safariland. The 4" holster works with the full size M&P & the CORE holsters work with a direct-milled RMR.

That's pretty much were my minded ended up also. But for $190 and a 3-4 week wait … I'll call and make certain. I'll post up the results when I know for certain.

Today, I was finally able to place a pre-order for the ACRO at Optics Planet.

Regular Guy price was $594 shipped (estimated 1-3 months).

I did not see any listings on the site for the mounting plates, however.

Ridgedog,
My M&P CORE is 4.00" barrel. I had it mixed up in my mind with my old M&P .45 which did have a 4.25 barrel. Everything else is correct. That holster number should get you going.

That being said, I ordered the holster 12 Dec and have not yet seen a ship notice. It was bundled with a 1911 holster and mag pouch which also have not yet shipped.

LongEye, thanks for the update.  I'll order one up when I get home from work. Then. Begin.The.Wait,

IF you are going to order from Optics Planet this thread here always has valid 10-12% coupon codes posted in it.

Make sure you go to the current page and find the latest posts with the codes. Sometimes you have to try a few codes to find one that has not been used. If you are copy/pasting make sure there is no space at the end.

This. My M17 will probably be the first gun that gets an ACRO from me. I just wasn't too much a fan of the DPP when I had it on my G34 previously.

Any specifics about the DPP that you can tell us about that made you not too much of a fan? I’ve been following this thread and don’t recall if you’ve mentioned the specifics already.

Mark - mostly that it was too tall. 0.495 front sight was too tall to fit in  a 6384RDS  holster even. I liked that the battery was removable without removing the sight though. Comparatively short battery life as well (when compared to an RMR), but definitely when compared to the rifle dots that were at the time my only reference.

Thanks. I currently don’t have an RDS equipped gun and I had considered the DPP, it may not make my short list now.

Why'd you use such a tall front? You only need a .40" tall front and it works fine in a 6360rds. I love my DPP's, I'm just curious to try the ACRO.

I contacted Strohman's and their LE pricing is excellent, so much so I placed an order. Only about $50 more that LE pricing on RMR. I think the ACRO is going to do very well at that price point.

Looking at current offerings I'd go with DPP first, even in front of an RMR. I despise the type 2 programming, so much so I sold the ones I had. Switching to auto adjust was a non-starter for my use. The DPP has a larger FOV, clearer glass and allows you to set the brightness where you want it and it stays there until adjusted again.

I'm looking forward to the ACRO too, for sure.

Oh, forgot to share. I did a halfassed cut of my SIRT. By halfassed I mean, just enough to mount up the Glock plate that came with it into an M&P. Works. That steel slide is serious. Really hard steel. Not what I expected.

Now, got to look around the wrong parts of the internet, see if someone makes knockoff plastic or pot metal suppressor height sights I can finagle on there. Do not want to spend $200 on iron sights for this but would be nice to get the full experience. Maybe I'll fab something.

Yeah, the "RMR" is too tall, but no worse than a dovetail mount, which was done by Doc back on page 40, for example.

Anyone been thinking of an M&P CORE? The 4" one (10268) seems to be on a distributor closeout, so there's a deal.

Not entirely sure how to get you a link, but my LGS is one of those that has the online store section. Which is 99.97% things not on their shelves, but is a service connected to all the big distributors. If your local has this setup, go look for this:

That's the two barrel kit (one that sticks out, with threads) and is at least $100 off the normal retail. We seem to be at a low CORE availability time, so based on my other poking around, may be an even better deal right now. They had about 30 left when I  checked.

If I am wrong: it's not a deal, etc. do tell and I'll shut up about it.

I know in the early stages of this thread their were a few guys mounting MRDS to compact pistols (G26/M&P9C).  I can't seem to track back who that was to direct this specifically at them but I am trying to determine if their were any issues with those long term due to the higher slide velocity.   I am wanting to find a used beater M&P9c and put a DPP on it but want to confirm its viable long term.

ETA:  Paging @DocGKR

That seems to be a decent price, I don’t think it’s too much off their blue label program though (from memory) as I think they were in the $580 range.  I just picked up a like new core for $475 from a dealer.

@DocGKR    has them mounted on both platforms I believe, definitely on the M&P9c. Might want to ping him

On this topic, anyone have experience mounting them on the single stack Glock pistols (43 etc)?  I’ve seen slides cut for them (Suarez) but it looks like the RMR hangs off the slide a bit on either side.  I’m concerned this will cause extra wear on the optic and/or holster issues.

I was told by the good folks over at Strohman Enterprises that they'll have the Aimpoint ACRO next month. Pretty excited for that.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Not DocGKR, but I have an M&P 9c with a Type 1 RM07 on it.  Not shot daily, but has had a few thousand rounds through it over the five plus years I've had it.  Only issue was a flickering dot long ago, which was fixed by judiciously bending the terminals and adding a small piece of electrical tape to the battery for a snugger fit.  Just changed the battery, which was still working, after roughly four years.   Very happy with the setup.

I have had several compact guns

26/27

43

sheild

1911 officers sized all

all with dots over the years

no problems other than the typical gen 1 faults of rmr

i can say i have purchased 4 holosun 507c optics they have been excellent one has over or close too 4500 rounds

others are around 500-2k rounds

Do you remember who milled your 43 slide?  Only ones I can find are Suarez.

I found that Grey Ghost does a red dot slide that seems very nice, but only for the Sheild RMS which from what limited info I’ve read has had a shaky start...

I have a Glock 34 with the slide cut, and I have an RMR06 series 2 mounted on there.

I'm right about 2000 rounds through the combination and I have discovered that I need to re-zero the dot. I originally sighted it in at 10 yards and then checked it at 25 yards.

Monday I went to an RDS for LE class at the Vortex Academy and discovered that I was hitting high & left at 25 yards. (Most of our shooting was at 7 and 10 yards, but to begin with we did accuracy work at various distances on B-8 bullseye targets.) This was true for me, one of the instructors, and one of my buddies of known ability who also test fired my gun.

The red dot might NOT be co-witnessed with the front sight after I verify zero -- is that a big deal? I'm not sure if it will be distracting to me or not because I'm getting used to focusing on the target rather than the front sight when using the RDS.
