RFI: 2 Holsters

Trying to combine a pair of RFI's so I don't clutter things up with too many topics.

Maybe my search fu sucks (no maybe about it, it does).

I currently carry AIWB in a Armordillo Concealment Xfer and while I like it I'm not above trying other options. Does anyone have any experience with Phlster Spotlight holster?  If so, let me know what your opinions are as to comfort and concealability.

The other holster I'm looking at, (because while I like AIWB carry, there are times where OWB would without doubt be more comfortable), is the RCS Perun.  Same as above if you have one how well does it tuck in and being OWB I'd imagine the comfort level is pretty high.

I have found no reviews of value to me on this one and only a few on the Phlster on P & S.

Thanks in advance for any info that mat be forthcoming.

Do you have pictures of the mod?

I'll get them up when the wife gets back tomorrow, she went to visit some of her friends and stole my G19, took her AR15, G43,  my M590A1 and about 2k rounds for girls night.

Thanks.  I started cutting some foam at work today in various sizes but all roughly wedge shaped. I’m thinking they’re too small so having something against which I can gauge their size would be good.

Seriously?  The man tells you his wife is out at a girl's night that sound like the start of John Wick III and your only comment is on the size of foam wedges?  Really?

If plans work out for Texas M.Wilson

myself, Bill, Idaho and maybe you will be in a vehicle together for the better part of 48 hours round trip, I’ve got time on my side to get answers, and, this is Lightfighter, the fact that Mrs. M.Wilson is going to get her John Wick on didn’t strike  me as unusual, so, yeah, foam wedges.

I used a 1/4" thick  1 1/2" wide across the part at the bottom where it locks on to the flashlight and I double it up to make it thick enough. It's pretty squishy so if your foam is more/less squishy YMMV. I just used the elCheapo weatherstripping/truck cap foam with the adhesive on one side.

It isn't "pretty" but I'm a function over form kinda guy. Besides if someone other than the Mrs. Is gandering at that while I'm wearing it, most likely to be getting a toe tag shortly after that.

I made another holster out of a hernia truss and it's what my CW9 rides in every day in non permissive environments. I can even swim in it with none the wiser. When I am birthing a leftist, I don't have to worry about dropping it or having someone see or try to grab it from under an adjoining stall as I just put it up and to the side as needed and then slide it back down  to AIWB. I will start another thread on that one if there's any interest.IMG_20180915_110829IMG_20180915_110745IMG_20180915_110726IMG_20180915_110722IMG_20180915_110701IMG_20180915_110647IMG_20180915_110630IMG_20180915_110605IMG_20180915_110605IMG_20180915_110600IMG_20180915_110525IMG_20180915_110513IMG_20180915_110453

Looks effective. Similar to the kangaroo AirMarshal holsters.

The foam I have is pretty dense and I’ll probably just try rubber cement/goop at first. Function over form always. That’s why my guns are ugly.

For a 6 buck investment, I've had good luck cutting up one of these garden mats to make wedges.  The foam used seems to have the right amount of give, but does take a day or two to compress and take a set.

Actually have 2 of those already. One at work  for an elbow rest on my granite surface plates when my bursitis was acting up. Thanks.

I just layered it to get the thickness I needed. Make sure to use isopropyl alcohol or other degreaser to clean the kydex or the foam won't stick real well. If you use multiple layers you can cut through the adhesive with a sharp kitchen knife and then put the final layer over to cover the edges where the adhesive is showing on the foam since it doesn't grab your short hairs... Or once you get it dialed in you can cover it all with mohair to give it a nice finished and comfortable touch.

So I made good wedges out of my small garden mat. Looks similar to what M.Wilson posted pics of.

I slit it into roughly .300” layers. Glued one on to my XFER after keeping it folded for several hours so it would conform to the shape of the holster better, then glued another layer on top of the first, instant added comfort this A.M. on the drive to work. Used Goop automotive adhesive. So far it’s holding together very well.

LOL.... don't you think you might have been able to find something a little less "bendy" than a surface plate for an elbow rest?

Well, sure, I could have, but when dealing with tolerances down in the +/- 1 or 2 ten thousandths of an inch, you suck it up and use the equipment best suited to the job. In this case a bursitis aggravating granite surface plate.  I do get your point but accuracy is my thing at work. You want something measured fast and accurately, I’m your guy.  Been that way for 36 years. I’m an old dog. No new tricks for me.

I’m actually considering trying a small wedge in my JMCK AIWB mag pouch. For comfort reasons not concealability. Easily revered if it doesn’t work out.

The Wedge on the mag pouch is a no go for me.  Jammed the base pad into my side a bit below my ribs to the point of it being painfully annoying. Already have it restored to original condition.

So getting back to my OP, I took delivery of a Phlster Spotlight yesterday and so far it puts my XFER to shame in all possible ways. Comfort, safety, concealability.  All better with the Spotlight. Just playing with the different height modwing standoff’s, whichbi msy ditch completely as tucking in the butt of the gun is not an issue I need to address. I may add foam to the molded in teardrop shaped wedge to enhance the comfort but it’s not a require as of now. Real fast turnaround time from Phlster. The holster shipped about 45 minutes after placing my order. With a Sunday and holiday in the mix from order to in my pants was 6 days.

I will have to look into that holster.

I would strongly suggest that you do. A couple of days in now and I’ve got it set up just about right I think. A single pull the dot belt loop,  the left one looking down on the holster in the wearing it position, with the loop attached to the bottom hole, using the shorter (.2800” vs. .4000”) of the 2 provided modwing stand-off pieces. I’ve oretty much found my sweet spot. I’m pleased. Next up a Phlster Skeleton mag carrier to ride next to my JMCK carrier.

So I ended up picking up an RCS Perun as well as the Phlster Spotlight. So far it is a pretty awesome rig for kind of a plain jane OWB gun bucket. Rides tight to the hip comes with spacers to make threading a thick Mean Gene belt relatively easy. Also has straight drop and both left and right handed 10 degree cant belt loops included. I have my yard work and puttering around in the garage set up now.

I too recently picked up a Phlster, based off of what I read here and after Jedi's class at FOP3.  Shockingly, a full sized G22 hides better and more comfortably then my G43 in a Tulster AIWB holster.  My wife couldn't tell I had a full sized gun under a light sweater, and I can only imagine a hoodie or thicker shirt would hide it even better.  A lot of wisdom was in "pocket carry those baby guns and just carry a full sized gun in a quality holster" advice I got at FOP3.

I haven't played with the second (smaller) wing/hook/whatever it's called that was included and so far I haven't needed to add a wedge to the holster, but I really haven't had a chance to wear it around a lot.

The Phlster is pretty amazing. My comped G19 with TLR-1HL disappears under just an untucked t-shirt And I’m a pretty slender guy at 6’3” and 190. It’s almost cold enough in Reno now for my usual daily winter wear of a pullover hoodie so absolutely no concerns with concealment.

I did add a bit of padding to the built in teardrop shaped wedge more for comfort than to aid in concealment.

So for a couple of days I ran the Spotlight with the larger/taller of the 2 modwing/claw standoffs and while it does tuck the butt in closer it just doesn’t feel right and I’ve swapped back in the shorter standoff. I think I’m going to leave it as is now.
