So...my mother just called me, she heard about our Agent who just had his head smashed in this morning out in W TX and wants to buy me a helmet.

I’m aware of the big names ie: Ops-Core, Crye, Team Wendy, M-Tech and 3-M and their options. What is the current leader as far as protection, weight, comfort, warranty, cst. service? I use TCI over the head earpro and it’d be nice if thoes integrated without having to buy another set to dedicate but I’m open to that as well. I’ve got a big mellon so the largest size available from each would be what I’m looking at.

Availability of a bump version of whatever ballistic helmet I end up with would be nice for high angle, rappelling, tunnel  stuff and as a NVG platform when ballistic coverage is not needed.

I’ve read the posted reviews here about most of these and they all seem good...is one ahead of the pack? What say you all?

I only have personal experience with the Ops Core, but most of the guys I have talked to are ditching them (and the Crye) for the Team Wendys.

As for over the head earpro, I dont think most guys are using that nowadays, so the helmet pad setup might not accommodate them as well.  In my experience the helmet mounted earpro in addition to a standalone set are worth the investment.  Especially if you are going to be using NODs. The increased stability from mounting the earpro to the helmet alone (not to mention the comfort) is worth it.  I could get away with not fastening the chin strap and still run PVS-31As without any issues.

BooneGA, that tracks with what I’ve found in my research...my TCI’s are getting pretty beat up anyway so a 2nd set will probably be in order either way.

The offerings from 3-M & M-Tech are the unkowns for me, the weight of them seems to be a huge benefit, especially for some one who will only be wearing it occasionally.

ETA: Just saw that Team Wendy released a Gen II Exfil at SHOT and it’s weight is now comparable with the 3M & M-Tech...

I ordered my MTEK on the pre-order, only complaint was the lack of left eye dominate chin straps, which they now have. I've enjoyed it, it's by far the lightest helmet i've used. Holds 31s ok with nothing but my liberators holding the helmet in place and once you click the chin strap in they are very stable. Integrates well with Avon's  and the cut is similar to the Maritime so my Liberators sit were I want them to when rail mounted. It is ok comfort-wise wearing the liberators with the headband under the helmet but much better helmet mounted, minor if any annoyance from my eyepro (Oakley Split Jackets). Chin strap uses the same adjustment thing as TW, I prefer the Ops-Core style but these work fine, liner is also similar to TW Epic Air.

I do believe MTEK is back ordered right now so TW may be easier to get, especially with that 20% off deal.

Yeah it looks like a solid combination and I’m seriously considering grabbing one but I’m just curious for more feedback. Lighter than an AirFrame or FAST, with a higher ballistic rating, and with a TW/D30 suspension and liner seems pretty outstanding especially when the price is 2/3 of a comparable Ops-Core setup.

"We the willing, led by the unknowing, are doing the impossible for the ungrateful."

No card, but a couple the guys i've asked around are giving it the thumbs up. Saying weight feels similar to a Crye. The new helmets have no pass through bolts like the MTEK, so i'm going to guess (I do not have one in hand and didn't look to close when I did) that like the MTEK they are not compatible with other companies chin straps, though I stand to be corrected.

Check out this helmet video on different types of armor being shot. The ultra light weight helmets do not do well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_QfkP4F-N0

I did a T&E on the 3M ultra light weight helmet. I loved the helmet but it did poor on ballistic tests.

I’ve got a MC TW Exfil on its way to me...I think it was a solid choice all things considered.

Now I need to figure out how to crack the intigrated comms nut. I snagged their Peltor QD mount kit so Comtac III’s might be in the future but I love my TCI DEHP’s so...not sure. I use a earpiece at work is anyone just throwing on a helmet with earpro attaches on over the acoustic tube?

You could modify your TCIs with the Unity SARA kit if you are tied to the DEHPs.

I've had a set of Sordins (same chassis as DEHPs, unless there's been a change that isn't reflected in manufacturer photos) with SARAs for some years now and they work well with the Peltor mounts.  It will take some permanent modification to both the "legs" of the Peltor component and the headset, however.

As for an earpiece under a headset, I've done this with a TCI earpiece under a set of single-comm Liberator II's so I could run two radios.  I prefer dual-comms headsets, of course, but this was a case of using what was available to me at the time.  It wasn't uncomfortable.

Careful with Crye if you have a head that is both large and oval shaped. I have an XL that is still sitting in the box as I mess with different pads. I love the thing, but I don't think that I'm going to be able to make it fit.

Head circumference can be very misleading with sizing. By the numbers, it should work easily. But I have an inch of space on each sides, with next to no clearance front to back.

The Crye last is a lot more circular (vs. the oval of Ops-Core).

My Team Wendy order came in a couple days ago. The 20% off Black Friday sale allowed me to go ahead and replace my ProTec bump helmet as well, it’s a huuuuuge improvement BTW!

I haven’t spent any time under these other than walking around the house but so far I’m impressed at thier level of comfort. The retention system was easy to adjust and the Boa does not cause me any hotspots when I snug it up. I needed to order a couple things from First Spear as well and took the opportunity to grab their Helmet Hut...it’s pretty nice...

I got the TW helmet cover and it fits very nice as well as their Peltor headset adaptors. A buddy of mine found a set of TCI’s that we’re no longer being used by his team and is sending them my way so I may need to get different adaptors but hopefully I’ll be able to get this thing fully rigged and take it out for a walk in the next week or so and get a better idea of how it rides.

Will both the ballistic and the bump fit in the Hut?

You’re just full of new goodies aren’t you? This and a Colonel blade, too.  I’m jealous.

Yea...X-mass came early (you’re also forgetting about the 1911 I’m having commissioned ). The bump fits in the hut just fine...or are you asking if they will both fit at the same time? If so, I haven’t tried. The bump will most likely just get strapped to my high angle kit bag and thrown in the back of my unit. Not really concerned about it getting scratched up or impact like I am about the ballistic version.

As an aside, how fragile are ballistic helmets? I’m not planning on throwing it around or dropping it but, it’s be nice to know.

Yeah. I meant both at the same time. Rereading my post I wasn’t clear on that.

I’d bet they’re pretty tough, but my ACH is all I’ve got so I’m not about to experiment.

Didnt forget about the 1911, just giving you the opportunity to bring it up again.

Santa’s bringing me an AK pistol this year. Or so I’m told.

I have a very similar setup to yours. This is a way, not thee way. I run my Opscore carbon for every night use tracking groups and cutting when I am running NODS. I have my TW ballistic with SRS Avengers for when something spikes the threat level, I.e. Armed subject(s), large dope load, or anything else that may lead to a gunfight with the current intel put out.

Hope this helps

Instead of starting a whole new thread, I figured this would be a good place to ask.

I’m gonna be flat out honest, I have zero knowledge about any of the new helmets. I am hoping to semi-jack this thread and have you guys help me pimp my head.

I had been using a MICH for my PVS-14 because it was given to me.

I have the fortune of coming into a set of PVS-31a’s next week for personal use. I am super stoked. I want to upgrade and get the best helmet I can to run this rig on. I have a XL head and from what I have read and going by my melon shape/size, I think the Crye is out of the running.

I know nothing about the differences in the suspensions, left eye dominate, dial knob/worm knob...just lost.

I have typically run MSA Sordins, on a head band, under my helmet. I would like to stick to the Sordin types but move the attachments to the helmet instead of under it. Looking at Team Wendy they have the arms for Peltors; is there a Sordin option for the Team Wendy exfil.

I want a ballistic helmet as I am a reserve LEO, although I am fine with a high cut type helmet. I do coyote and hog control so I spend a lot of hours at night under NODS.

From this thread, TW Exfil sounds like a win. Can you give me a push in which direction to go for suspensions and padding? Keep in mind I am in humid ass SC.

ANY info is greatly appreciated, as well as the best places to buy.

Thanks in advance

Yes you can get Sordin adapters from either Unity Tactical or you can modify the Peltor adapters to fit.

Left eye dominant strap basically means if you shoulder your rifle on your left shoulder. If you get left eye dominant strap, then the buckle will be on your right sight. Suspension/padding is already bomber on the TW. No need to change anything.

I used one of these to mount my MSA Sordins to my Team Wendy LTP: http://www.unitytactical.com/shop/mark-sara-kit/

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Hootiewho, jack away!

My XL head and the TW size 2 helmet are a perfect fit, there is still adjustment up and down on the dial, and yea...the padding is really nice.

Do we like the Unity MARK system better than the TW Peltor adaptor + SARA? Any benefits one way or the other? (I already have the TW Peltor adaptor and just need to order the SARA but could sell / send it back if the MARK is a better system)

The MARKs are smaller than the TW adapters, I believe, but my main reason for going to them is so that I could try and use the Remora system: http://www.unitytactical.com/shop/remora-mark-mount/

That way, the rail being blocked by ear pro doesn't matter quite as much, as you still have the ability to mount some accessories. I currently got a Princeton Tec Switch on one side, and I'll throw up an old M600U on the other side once the M600DF comes out and I pull the M600Us off my rifles. I'll try and bring it next time we hang out.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Thanks for the info in this thread. I have a TW Exfil trucking it’s way to me. They didn’t have the Kang’s Gold or Pimp-Slap Purple in stock, so Ranger Green will just have to do

Went ahead and got the wilcox arm for my incoming PVS-31a and got the Unity kit to mount my Sordins up with as well.  Should be set.
