RFI: Nikon Optics

What's the word on Nikon?  Back in my photography days they had a good reputation with their Nikkor line of lenses, but I know next to nothing about their scopes.  I've looked at what appears to be their low end in the P-223 3-9x40.  It appears to be very similar to my discontinued Redfield Battlezone 3-9x42, which I like a lot.  What scares me away from this is the price $120.00 +- a few bills.

Intended use is for my Savage .308 bolt action or on my 5.56 carbine (So my Redfield can stop pulling double duty) paper punching or steel clanging at typically under 300 yards.

Still plenty of high quality Nikkor lenses.  I have a pair of their binoculars and they are a great value, but definitely not Leica.  I don't have any Nikon weapon optics.  I'll guess that they are a decent value buy, for simpler optics (fixed or simple 3-9x, not 1-8x FFP).

So I inadvertently solved the “it’s only $120” problem by scoring a P-223 4-12x40 for free. My buddy and sort of long range guru/teacher/helper is giving me his on the condition that if on the Texas hog hunt I bag one, that I bring him several pounds of feral hog bacon. Deal.  I’ll get to test it out to see if it is good enough for my limited needs and abilities.

I've had good luck w/ Nikon 3x9 on my hunting rifle , their binos & range finder all which I still use after 8+ years. I did buy a Nikon for a black powder gun that I never could get zeroed. To their credit, Nikon CS told me to mail it back to them, but life got in the way & I never did.

So my buddy Mike stopped by Saturday to drop off the Nikon scope and it turns out it’s the M-223 scope. He also gave me his “precision” rifle. Unfortunately it’s a Bushmaster lower with a Stag upper. Magpul PRS stock and 3 pound Timney trigger. Now I wouldn’t put together a rifle of this pedigree but I have seen Mike put 5 rounds of M193 into a dime size group at 100 yards several times with this set up, and it’s free, on the conditions I:

1) Don’t paint it

2) Don’t sell it, and,

3) Give it back the day I die.

Yeah, that’s going to happen.

Even just a little bit?

Nope. Although I did put my Magpul MBUS rear sight on it, but it was already painted.
