I swear by the Wigwam Trail Mix Fusion socks. Merino, and they have a "liner" type material woven into the inner. I've worn them in All my boots, rucking, carrying a dismounted grunt load in Afghanistan, to elk hunting in the Alberta backcountry in AB. I have pairs that I used over a decade ago and they're still going strong. Once I went to them, and properly fit my boots, I noted a big reduction in blisters and hot spots.
the Canadian Army issues a two sock system, a thin synthetic liner sock and two types of wool outer sock, a temperate weather and a cold weather sock. I like the system, however it goes upto the knee, which drives me nuts. much prefer my socks to go just above the top of my boot, not all the way up my leg.
