Steiner Mk7 shotgun light

Saw these awhile ago but at over $200 I passed not only because of the price but also because of the mount requirements and the activation system.

Mounting it requires you to remove the extended mag tube.  You lose two rounds.  On a shotgun some might not want that.  Activation wise, there is no remote paddle switch.  There are two rubberized buttons 180 degrees apart that you click on and click off.  Please don't put your hand over the muzzle.

Positive wise, it is slick as shit, and while only 350 lumens the light in white and centered.  Plus, like all things Steiner, it is built...overbuilt...beautifully made.  Check out their red dots and lights.   Kick ass shit.

Steiner is blowing out these for $55 shipped.  Had to try it for that.

Probably obvious from the pics but that is a Benelli Supernova Tactical 12ga.

Brother MG I'm glad you got one.  For that price why not.

Shotguns are already sucking hind tit on ammunition capacity,  so there is not a chance I would give up a couple of rounds for a new slick light, when there are other perfectly suitable options.  There is a reason  for the blow out price.  The concept is not optimal.

The end cap of the Nordic NXT tubes is common to all - the only thing that differs is the extension nut (which goes on the host shotgun for the tube to screw into) which is shotgun/model specific.

The ends of the extension tube are both threaded the same on the two Nordic extensions I have (Mossberg 930 and Remington 870) they are much finer threads than the endcap of anything I own, except maybe a Belgian Browning Sweet Sixteen.

Based on that I don't think it will work, unless I'm missing something.

Even though I'm pretty good with a shotgun, I'm like another poster, I'm not badass enough shucking shells into the thing to give up an extended tube for a light.

I am curious how these hold up to muzzle blast on a 14" SBS.  I like the concept.  Especially for $55 direct from Steiner.

I was thinking along those lines myself, however it appears that the switches would be at or beyond the muzzle on a 590 or 870 platform.

My mind went straight to TAC-14 with MK7 when I saw this.

The 500/590 thing is odd to me. The 590 is the one with magazine cap similar to the 870 or 1301, and is a .mil shotgun to boot. It seems like it would be easier for Steiner to make the 590 version than the 500 version.

Whatever- I ordered one for the 1301 and one for the 870. Now I will have to buy a 1301.

Well, I recently acquired a 500 for some secondary roles, and I jumped on this option.   I'll report back on what I find.

Of course, I JUST purchased a new magazine end screw for the sling fitting, and this won't work with it...

No sorry needed.  I said it right up front.  You lose ammo and the switching is basically I'm leaving it on until it's over because of the way it works.

My shotgun only leaves my house to go to the range in daylight. It is not my HD gun.  But what I use it for is patio bear defense.  My town is being overrun by black bears.  They tipped over my wood pile.  They pooped in my yard.  Chances are at the CBS, someone will decide the better place to pee will be at the end of my backyard.   He will never be seen again.

When I sit outside at night having a cigar near the firepit, I have my Benelli with Breneke slugs, my cigar and a frosty Powerade Zero.  For $50 it's perfect for that.

Between Lyle, Steve & myself we’ll have additional feedback on 3 gauges using this besides His Eminence’s that started this thread.

My house 1301T doesn’t have the Nordic+ 2 extension like my game 1301T but I do like the Zhukov forend I added to it. Still not liking the MP light mount option that I’m using w/ it  but this *may* solve that issue.

An LE bud that’s taken some DB SG classes w/ me, posted on PF he had the Steiner but X’d it as he didn’t like it’s lack of momentary usage option plus the on/off buttons were to far forward IHO.

The lack of momentary isn’t a thing for me & the location of the on/off switches are TBD for me.

Shoot, why did I keep looking.  A light for an 870 I now only use for trap and clays.   Thanks Con

Longeye-

I had over 1200 rounds through mine (M500 14”) - mix of slug, buckshot, and breaching rounds. No issues with recoil impulse, but it is a sample of one.

At least everyone should give me a bit of credit considering it's only $55.  I've done much, much worse here.

How big are the black bears in town on average?

In the 250 range although they had a monster 450 they had to tranquilize on a golf course a couple of years ago. ( I don't know where that ranks sizewise around the country but for here, that's huge.)

Mostly,  they're just hungry.  They love attacking the garbage cans.  They are content just to avoid people and pets.  Just bears doing bear shit.  I'd be miserable if I had to shoot one.  I love bears.  My step back into the house are 10 feet from where I sit.  Even I can get back inside the house quickly.  The Benelli is just in case..

Does this replace the end cap?  I think this would be good on a “Sporting Shotgun” in socialist utopias on a bird gun.

Yes.  It replaces the end cap. The unit is in two pieces.  One is the replacement cap.  Then you thread the light into the other end.  Takes 2 minutes to install.

How long is the overall length, and how far does the tube screw in? I can't find useful specs on the Steiner site. I have a very limited length of barrel past my magazine (870 with barrel cut down to be just on the good side of legal,) and it 'looks like' the switches will either be even with or in front of the muzzle, and a good part of the bezel will be in a position to receive a lot of fresh muzzle blast from behind. Unless it is smaller than it looks or screws in a bit. I would love for this to work on my house gun.

Inquiring minds want to know! Thanks in advance.

CR

Ordered one for a 1301.  I am thinking a 24” Competition 1301 with one of these will let me shoot anything from clays to hotel security, and travel well to socialist states.  Option two is an A400 plus that should be the same end piece.

I was thinking about getting one to put on an old cherry 18" Wingmaster and one to set aside for a TAC14.

The Steiner site had this:  I purchased a 9075 Remington MK7 for my 870 tac-14. I cannot seem to get the magazine tube adapter to start on the magazine tube threads. Am I missing something? The factory barrel nut threads on easily.

Steiner Tech Support said:  The Tac-14 is using a different magazine tube than the typical Rem 870.

Can anyone confirm this as being true?

I cant see why Remington would add another mag tube end cap to the inventory.

DLEHR,

i swapped out the stock TAC -14 magazine end cap with an extension and it fit fine.  The tube does have the detents which you have to remove  if you want to change the follower (I have the tool needed).

If you can wait a day, I'm suppose to have a Steiner light delivered today. I  can pull the extension and try the fit if it helps you out (I have another use for the Steiner).

Thanks.  I went ahead and ordered two.  When I get a TAC 14 if it doesn't work I'll give it to my son.

FYI All,

Per above I tried and successfully fit the MK7 light to a Rem. Tac-14.

But it probably falls into the "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" catagory

Have to think the light would not do well with repeated firing, especially with full

load 12's.  YMMV

According to Mick Fury in his post above, the lights are plenty durable in the exposed muzzle position. As I think about it, the analog is to X300U WML's on a G19. The aluminum head gets carbon built up, as do the lenses, but the electric function of the light remains unfazed. A pencil eraser and some WD-40 or Chapstick on the lenses, and your back in business.

You can place a couple of layers of black electrical tape on the top to protect the body.  Like peel away face visors.  The buttons should be timed at 3 and 9 o'clock so they're pretty much out of the way.  This Steiner shit is VERY well built.  I would think you and it will be fine.

Also, all of these purchases and I haven't found one referral check yet in my mailbox.  (Hint:  Its customarily 20% but because it's you guys, I'll settle for 20%.)

I bit and ordered one. I still have a Laser Products light similar to this, with a long tape switch built in, in the parts bin. It fits Remington's. The MK7 may fit a niche I have  on a Mossberg Breaching gun. It would likely be very good on the 16" breaching guns, if the lenses don't get blown out.

I have not enjoyed shooting with a Surefire forend, or any of the various fore end mount light variations I have tried, so I'll be glad to give this a shot. I shot in a MDTS shotgun class Columbus Day weekend and as usual my hand hurt because I can't seem to push/pull, and keep my hand off the back of the light housings. If I receive it in time I'll see if I can get one of our 500's to the MDTS lowlight class next weekend near Rochester with Chris.

Dagga, you going to use this on your Mossberg project?

Well Con, I'd guess you got the referral bonus direct from Steiner .Otherwise the check is in the mail.

I actually have an older SF 870 WML on the Tac 14, taken off a different 870 build.  So I have mounted the Steiner mag cap on the other gun, if I ever need a light on it.
