There are varying ideas on threads and webbing types out on the market.

Look at no less than #69 bonded thread..

Currently the industry is using sizes between this and 138 threads.

Threads are sold in 4oz 8 oz and 1lb CONES and depending on how much you roll, they can last for a while, but estimate about 15-30% of that thread cone not used rather cut into shreds on your floor.

how about shock cord and cord locks like on the tactical tailor mag pouches?

I am having zero luck locally.

Even the outdoorsy store just have really small and really large stuff.

No joy on CQB solutions selling raw material. Confused

They've stopped doing that.

REI has a good selection of 1" tubular webbing for making drag handle. The olive colour is GTG.

You might notice Paragear popping up quite a bit in there. For the beginner, they are a nice, one-stop shopping place, that sells goods at higher prices, but in small quantities. TANSTAAFL. Until you are ready to invest several hundred bucks in supplies, they are a good source to start with.

Sewone sold me my Juki DNU-1541S at about as good a price as you will find. Service and support have been excelent.

I have had very good luck for the most part on eBay, but it is hard to tell just what you are getting from the photos sometimes. Something that looks OD on your screen may be a tad closer to forrest green than you wanted when it shows up, that sort of thing. Usually, it is not so bad a deal and you can use it, but it can be a bit of a crapshoot. Remember: most designs for gear use materials in places that it cannot be seen, so this might be a good place to use materials that are a bit off-spec in color, etc.

If you have a Northern Industrial store near you, they sell tarps made out of various weights and colors of Cordura that can constitute a pretty good deal sometimes. Man, some of those colors can be pretty funky though. :-) I have obtained perfectly servicable black, browns, tans, royal blue, international orange and OD green that way. I passed on the fuschia and neon puke green, though :-)
